Greywacke (pronounced Greywacky) is the Marlborough label of the Judd family and the name of New Zealand’s most abundant bedrock. These understated grey river stones are found throughout Marlborough’s rivers and alluvial vineyard soils. Established in 2009, Greywacke is truly a family affair. The fruit is sourced from mature vineyards in prime viticultural sites to optimise the potential afforded by Marlborough’s sunny South Pacific climate. The Greywacke range is primarily based on two varieties, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. Kevin’s signature vineyard photographs provide the distinctive identity of the Greywacke labels
In the late 18th century, our great-great-great grandfather was deeded the land on which our winery sits. Fast forward six generations and we’re still on the family farm. In 1984, Henry’s concord and Niagara grapevines were replaced with old world vinifera grapes. At the time, we were one of only a few Niagara wineries to make premium wines from our own grapes. In 1988, the winery helps found the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) with a handful of other Niagara wineries.

Today, it is fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist wife Prue at the helm, passionately upholding the family name and reputation.

North of Verona, in the town of Negrar, at the Valpolicella zone’s highest point (350 m – 1,148 feet), the Le Ragose estate overlooks gentle, lush green hills. In 1969, enologists Arnaldo Galli and his wife Marta bought the 70-acre Le Ragose estate, which had been abandoned. Recognizing that many excellent vineyard sites had been abandoned in favor of more easily-farmed sites on the plains, they replanted the Le Ragose vineyards and began making Amarone and Valpolicella in as natural a way as possible.
